There are many ways to approach fasting and also on what fasting actually means. In general, fasting is to abstain from something for a period of time. Today it is more commonly practiced as part of religous ritual, while the awareness of the health benefits have become obscured over time. There is much more I can share on the history of fasting and will leave that for future discussion. For now I want to lay out the general approach I will be taking as bart of my revitalized heath journey.
My past experience with fasting has varied from various food abstanance to full out water fasting where only water is taken. I had the most success with water fasting as I find it easiest to manage once past the first 24 hours and also the most physically beneficial. I have undertaken fasts from 1 day to up to 7 days as the longest. The longer fasts are effective but take more toll on the body and require more quiet time to rest the body and mind.
The most liveable approach was to allow for a 24 to 36 hour fast on two separate days in a week. my previous practice was for a weekend day and a wedensday.
The fast would typically start either after dinner of the pre-fast day or after lunch of that day depending on the planned length. The fast was usually broken at the morning meal following the fast day or later in the afternoon if it was a particularly good fasting experience.
I will have much more discussion on fasting in the future, but for now this is the approach I will be taking. I will report on each fast day to provide you with a sense of how it went and what the physical affects were.
