2015 was a very busy and stressful year for me. To the point that, in my 50th year, I have found myself the heaviest I have ever been at 197 lbs! With new aches and pains emerging and a realization that I have changed from a fit and healthy youth to a middle aged/pre-senior.
Every decade marks a new milestone in my life and each mark has usually resulted in setting and achieving a major goal. My earlier years where marked with more career related goals and less health related goals. Although I have always been health conscious and aware of my personal responsibility to my health and wellness.
The most marked shift occurred in my 40th year when at 38, I set a personal goal to compete in a Masters Body Building competition. I found a suitable event in Ottawa that was a month after my birthday. I registered and started my training program. It was a great experience and I learned much more about health and fitness. I worked with a coach who made a big difference for so many reasons. The decision to hire a coach was the single greatest success factor. Of course, maintaining such a high level of fitness is extremely intesive and although maintaining an active lifestyle, I allowed my dietery habits to slip resulting in going from 172 lbs at 40 to 197 lbs at 50! That's 25 lbs or an average increase of 2.5 lbs per year.
Of course, I have been experimenting with food as a health tool since my early teens mostly driven by my fathers interest and his engagement by having me be part of his journey. I have read about and tried almost every diet plan. Not because I needed to control my weight, but more to find a way to optimize my heath and wellness.
In this time I have developed opinions based on my experiences on what works and what doesn't. One of the practices that I found most effective is FASTING which is a practice that has very little medical based research but extensive investigation and experience as an alternative approach. I experimented with fasting in the late 80's during my last years at university and found the experience very benefitical for so many reasons.
Now at 50, I need to refocus my priorities and my most important priority is health. So this blog is my way to support my journey as well as provide support and information to those who are finding themselves at the same realization.
